A must have for all Spinone
enthusiasts!
The Italian Spinone By Carolyn Fry.
![]() |
The ancestors of the Italian Spinone were probably around in the fifth century BC, and there are pictorial representations by Mantagna as far back as the fifteenth century AD. However, it is a relatively 'new' breed in Great Britain, the majority of the present bloodlines tracing back to four Italian Spinoni imported in 1981. Since then, the breed has increased steadily in popularity. In her book, Carolyn Fry recounts its history, drawing on comments from prominent contemporary Italian breeders to give the Italian picture and detailing the successes of the Spinone in the show ring and the field in Great Britain. For those new to the breed, she describes it so that you can decide whether it is right for you; for those who decide that it is, she gives hints on how to make your choice. For those who are already 'hooked', she has written a detailed chapter on breeding, and there are pedigrees of winning British-bred Spinoni and Italian imports. There is also a chapter describing the various activities that you and your Spinone can enjoy, in the show ring, the field or even on the stage! |
| Carolyn Fry has been a Spinone enthusiast for
many years, and owned the first male Spinone Field Trial Award Winner, who
was also the first Spinone to gain a Group award at a Championship Show.
She has bred four generations of Spinoni under her Bedeslea affix, many of
whom have won well in various spheres. In addition to this, her dogs have
appeared in television programmes, including the popular London's Burning.
She has judged Spinoni at Championship level since 1992, as well as
several other gundog and terrier breeds, and is the Spinone breed
correspondent for Dog World.
