Choices

by Kathleen Kerr

Tomba has the sweetest face
and that coupled with the pace
of changing moods in Teddy eyes,
the pouting lips avoid reprise
and demand, "enough of this"
Training who? with Spinoni kiss...

A gentle soul but doggie rude
Tomba will stop being crude
to pull the cute card from her sleeve.
Then she'll run 'round to retrieve
and strew each squeak toy she has stored;
there's nothing worse than Spinoni, bored.

Tomba's crazed when you come home.
No matter how long you've been gone
she'll greet you with her "humming" song
(a bumbley, growly kind of sound
that says, "So glad that you're around!")

Christmas dinner, piping hot!
From the pheasants that she caught
on the hunt trip when we thought
that she might be afraid of shot.
But now she'll race to kiss the gun
as if to say the fun's begun!

You should see her comb a field
and watch the thickest brambles yield.
She can steamroll when it's wise
then slinks cat-like to stalk her prize.

But oh her lovely grace with quail
and that ceaseless, joyful tail

that stops on point as if to say
"Go ahead and make my day!"
And then she'll signal with her eyes
LOOK OVER HERE BEFORE IT FLIES!

The tail tells what the nose is knowing
and hidden partridge keep on showing.

Tomba has too long a back
but not so much that it detracts
from splendid eyes
near perfect coat
and a beard to get your goat.

At two she OFA'd one loose hip.
The experts said, "No bone change... yet."
With heavy hearts, but no regret
we moved before the will could fade;
